How to Get the Most Out of Your Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment?

Learn what hyperbaric oxygen treatments can do for you and how to maximize their benefits. Find out the factors to consider when selecting a HBOT facility.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a valuable medical therapy with potential benefits for a large number of health conditions. To ensure you receive the maximum benefits from your HBOT sessions, we want you to be as well-prepared and informed as possible. In this blog, we'll explore how you can get the most out of your HBOT experience.

Choosing the Right Hyperbaric Facility

Before starting HBOT, one of the most critical decisions you'll make is selecting the right facility for your treatment. Here are some factors to consider:

Certifications

Ensure the staff is certified to perform HBOT. Certification indicates that the facility meets specific quality and safety standards. Also, check if the facility is registered with your local or state medical board.

Medical Staff

Ensure the facility has a medical director who is an MD with knowledge of and training in hyperbaric oxygen therapy, as well as qualified medical staff in the clinic. For example, at Bay Area Hyperbarics, we have a full-time Nurse Practitioner on staff, and our hyperbaric technicians all have been trained as Emergency Medical Technicians (EMTs). We also have at least one technician on staff at all times who is a Certified Hyperbaric Technician (CHT).

Hard Chambers

Ensure the hyperbaric facility uses hard-sided chambers and that they use 100% oxygen. Many facilities use soft-sided chambers, which only supply up to 31% oxygen (some now supply up to 38%) and can only pressurize up to 1.3 atmospheres (ATA), though some can reach up to 1.5 ATA. In contrast, hard-sided chambers can supply 100% oxygen and pressurize patients up to 2.5 ATA (and sometimes 3.0 ATA).

Also, chambers should be ASME and PVHO approved.

Equipment Quality

Check the quality and maintenance of the hyperbaric chambers. Well-maintained chambers are more likely to provide safe and effective treatment and avoid potential malfunction during your session.

Reputation and Reviews

Before selecting an HBOT provider, do your research. Research the facility's reputation and read reviews from previous patients. Positive reviews and a good reputation can give you confidence in your choice.

Cleanliness and Safety

Make sure that the facility is clean and well-maintained. Ask about safety checklists and procedures to ensure safety. You should also inquire about any adverse events or risks associated with HBOT. At Bay Area Hyperbarics, our medical staff reviews every patient for their medical history, medications and potential contraindications, to ensure their safety. Because every patient is screened by medical personnel, risks with hyperbaric treatment at qualified clinics such as Bay Area Hyperbarics are very low.

Location and Accessibility

Choose a facility that is conveniently located and accessible to you. This will make it easier to attend your sessions regularly, ensuring consistency in your treatment.

Cost and Insurance Coverage

The cost of HBOT may vary based on the facility you choose. Also, it's important to check whether your insurance covers HBOT sessions. This will help you avoid any financial surprises down the line. At Bay Area Hyperbarics, we work directly with your insurance company and your medical providers to make it as likely as possible that your hyperbaric oxygen therapy sessions are paid for by insurance.

Pre-Treatment Preparation

To maximize the benefits of HBOT, there are some essential pre-treatment preparations to consider:

We Help You with Your Healthcare Provider

We guide you through your journey of getting started with hyperbarics. The first step in getting started with hyperbaric oxygen therapy is to give us a call. We will send you a welcome packet with information you need. We will then set you up with a consult with one of our medical professionals to ensure hyperbaric oxygen therapy is right for you. Depending on your condition and circumstances, we can talk with you about whether you can come straight to us, or based on your past medical history, you may need additional information from your healthcare provider.

During your intake for hyperbaric oxygen therapy, we will review prior health conditions and medications, as well as any concerns you or your family might have. We encourage you to include your family in the consultations, and welcome them visiting during the intake and during treatments. Of course, it’s always valuable to maintain a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise.

Medication and Lifestyle

Some of the things we will orient you to include the need to eat prior to your hyperbaric treatment. If you have a condition such as diabetes or hypertension, we will review your condition and ensure you and we take appropriate precautions before and during your treatment.

Clothing and Comfort

Before entering the chamber, we offer you a comfortable set of pajamas in our designated changing room. Once you're prepared, you can enter the chamber, and we will initiate your session.

Understanding the Hyperbaric Treatment Process

Understanding how HBOT works and what to expect during sessions is essential for a successful treatment experience.

HBOT involves breathing pure oxygen through a mask in a pressurized chamber. The increased pressure allows your body to absorb more oxygen, promoting healing, reducing inflammation, and providing numerous other benefits, depending on your medical diagnosis. During the session, you'll relax inside the chamber, and it's common to experience mild ear popping, similar to flying in an airplane.

You can unwind by enjoying a movie or indulging in a peaceful slumber while a specialist closely oversees your hyperbaric treatment.

Compliance and Consistency

Consistency is key to getting the most out of your HBOT experience. Attending all sessions and adhering to the recommended frequency and duration for optimal results is essential. Our heathcare team, working collaboratively with your medical care team, will provide specific instructions regarding your treatment plan, so follow them closely.

The frequency of your sessions will depend on several factors, such as the goals you want to achieve, the severity of your condition, and your medical condition. Our medical experts will help you get the most out of your treatment.

Post-Treatment Care

After completing your HBOT sessions, there are some post-treatment considerations to ensure a smooth recovery:

  • Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to assess your progress and determine if additional treatments are necessary.
  • Maintenance and Lifestyle: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle with proper nutrition and regular exercise. Follow any post-treatment guidelines provided by your healthcare provider.
  • Long-Term Benefits: Recognize that the benefits of HBOT may continue to develop over time, so be patient and maintain a positive outlook on your recovery.
