Bay Area Hyperbarics Talks with Parents About Concussion

Bay Area Hyperbarics Talks with Parents About Concussion
Thousands of Bay Area teens suffer concussions from accidents and sports such as Football and Soccer each year. As a mom with a son who suffered from a brain injury, I am proud to say that over the past 25 years, we have helped hundreds of teens and children recover from concussion and traumatic brain injuries.

Iknow how scary and confusing having a child with a concussion can be. We desperately want to help as our kids retreat to their darkened rooms. Doctors often say there is very little that can be done for our kids other than rest and pain medication. However, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) has been shown to improve lives after concussions. I have seen too many high-schoolers who live in their bedrooms, their futures on hold. HBOT has turned them around.

As I write this, we just finished treating an 11-year-old boy— let’s call him Jake. He was playing around and fell over a stair railing. He dropped two feet and landed on his head on concrete!

Jake was unconscious for 10 seconds. The ER doc diagnosed him with a concussion and prescribed non-stimulation (no electronics or sports) and children’s Tylenol for the headaches. When he arrived at Bay Area Hyperbarics, he still had dizziness when moving or bending over, a consistent (though mild) headache, difficulty sleeping, confusion, emotional outbursts, disorientation, and forgetfulness with words. For example, during a discussion, he could not recall the name of the fruit he liked. Jake could not attend school and often rested in his quiet, darkened room. After approximately 20 Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy treatments, Jake was able to return to school. HBOT is a treatment that not only reduces swelling, but it actually regrows brain cells, stem cells, and the blood vessels that supply blood to the brain.

For the fortunate kids who come to us, HBOT is typically the answer to their damaged brain. For research showing how HBOT heals brain injuries and brain lesions, refer to the page HBOT heals Traumatic Brain Injury and Concussions.
